On the sidelines of the 2022 World Bank Annual Meetings, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) organized the 6th edition of the “Babacar Ndiaye Lecture”. This year, the Prime Minister of Barbados was the guest of honor.

Pr. Benedict Oramah, President of Afreximbank, during his welcome speech. Ph. Afreximbank

From his opening speech, Professor Benedict Oramah, President of Afreximbank, set the tone. «African and Caribbean nations can transform the inequalities of history into platforms for economic prosperity, today and in the future,» he said. Thus taking up one of the main ideas of Dr Babacar Ndiaye who constantly called on Africans to "not give up and not to have any complexes".

For the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, «solidarity and justice are necessary to overcome the current global crisis». «There is an urgent need for solidarity and justice to overcome the global crisis caused by the terrible economic challenges the world is currently facing in terms of food, fuel and finance», she said.

Babacar Ndiaye, if he were still alive, would have taken up his pilgrim's staff in these troubled times that the planet is experiencing. But we can say that the next generation is fully assured, notably with the leader of Barbados, whose commitment to shared development is recognized beyond the borders of the island. It is indeed part of the task force set up by the Secretary General of the United Nations to find an appropriate response to the global crisis that is shaking the world.

For this return to physical meeting after two editions spent online, the «Babacar Ndiaye Lecture» of Afreximbank was a great success. For nearly 4 hours at The Ritz Carton hotel, the many participants shared their views of the world and what it should be like.

Babacar Ndiaye was the President of the African Development Bank from 1985 to 1995. He is recognized as one of the main initiators of Afreximbank.
