Brong dignitaries, people from northeast of Côte d'Ivoire on the Ghanaian border, gathered at a large hotel in Abidjan on Thursday to launch the Adayé Kessiè Festival. This event celebrates the yam just as it magnifies the Brong culture.

The Adayé Kessiè 2022 will take place in Tabagne, a locality in the department of Bondoukou, from November 08 to 12, 2022. For its launch, the King of the Brong, Nanan Adingra Kouassi Agyemane, made the trip to the Ivorian economic capital where he was joined by a delegation from Ghana, representing the same people in this neighboring territory of Côte d'Ivoire.

The launch ceremony was held in the large hall of the Hotel Le Wafou, in the south of Abidjan. Traditional songs and dances punctuated the ceremony. Several speeches were also heard. For the General Commissioner, Bini Daouda Ouattara, “Adayé Kessiè is a benchmark festival for the tourism industry in Côte d’Ivoire. It gives visibility to Côte d'Ivoire, which has the greatest cultural diversity".

An international vision

The central theme of the festival this year is: “yam in Brong country, pillar of food security and symbol of identity”. The festival intends to encourage and promote agriculture for food, especially in a context where food crops are increasingly neglected for industrial crops "which impoverish the soil" or for gold panning which is, for its part, a very polluting activity.

Yam is a very popular food in Côte d'Ivoire and in several African countries. It is eaten in several ways. For some, as for the General Commissioner of the festival, one can study the possibility of producing flour with this tuber, especially in the context of the scarcity of wheat flour caused by the war in Ukraine.

Organizations such as the European Union through its delegation in Côte d'Ivoire support this festival which has a national scope and which now wants to sell internationally. Last year, the Ivorian prime minister, Patrick Achi, made the trip to the festival square himself. "I am happy to find myself among you to feel, thanks to you and with you, the strength and vitality of this culture", he rejoiced.

The festival is an opportunity to visit Côte d'Ivoire and particularly the Bondoukou region. A tourist circuit is offered to national and international participants. Note that the launch ceremony was chaired by Dr. Adaman Kouadio, Chief of Staff of the Minister of Agriculture, representing the latter who is also a son of the region.
